This Issue Is Dedicated to Dr. Herbert Rand on His 95th Birthday
Herbert Rand, born in New York in 1907, practised law for 56 years before turning to the Bible. His 1970 article on figure vases and the Hebrew midwives has been cited in the Illustrated Dictionary of the Bible and in Sarna's Exploring Exodus, and nineteen more have appeared in this journal over twenty years. The tribute lists them all, from Justice in Solomon's Court to The Biblical Concept of Beauty in this issue.
Herbert Rand was born in 1907 in New York City. He received a BA from the College of the City of New York (now C.U.N.Y), an LLB from St. Lawrence University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Brooklyn Law School. He practiced Law in State and Federal courts for 56 years, from 1931 until his retirement in 1987.
In 1970, his article, “Figure Vases in Ancient Egypt and Hebrew Midwives” was published in the Israel Exploration Journal. This article has been cited many times in various books and periodicals, including the Illustrated Dictionary of the Bible, Exploring Exodus by Nahum M. Sarna, and the commentary to the latest translation of the Book of Exodus published by the Jewish Publication Society.
During the past twenty years, nineteen of his articles dealing with Biblestudy and biblical archeology were published in the Jewish Bible Quarterly. Six of his other articles were published elsewhere. In 1995, Dr. Rand taught a class at Rutgers University Academy for Life-long Learning for one semester and lectured there the following semester. He lives with his wife in Highland Park, New Jersey. Their family consists of two children, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
